Ducks Rally to ECC College Cup Championship
Danbury, CT: The weekend didn’t start out well for the Protec Ducks 07 as they looked forward to the challenge of AAA competition. Not having played a complete game yet, the team ended the preliminary round at 1-1-1, and was fortunate to sneak into the semi-finals as the 4th seed out of the seven team field. Coach Alvin remarked, “We were all watching the last game which had to go our way to earn a spot in the semi-finals, fortunately it did go our way. We didn’t have our best effort in the first few games.”
In the semifinals against AYHL opponent Elite Hockey Academy AAA, the Ducks stormed out to a 4-0 lead 10 minutes into the contest with goals from Louis Kilpatrick (2), Doug Jorgensen, and Matthew Spano. In a strong goaltending performance, James Friedman kept the opponents scoreless even after a full two minute 5-on-3. The Ducks coasted to a 5-0 victory.
In the championship game, the Protec Ducks earned a rematch against the NJ Colonials AAA team that defeated them 2-1 in the preliminary round. With revenge on their mind, the Ducks proved that they were the team to beat in the tournament. The game winner from Sean Fagan came less than 2 minutes into the game with a wrist shot from the slot that went post and in. The Ducks continued their steady pressure and got goals from Doug Jorgensen, Drew Larsen, Tyler Jones, Tair Gafiatullin, and another from Fagan. Nick Alvin, who made a strong sliding save to keep the game at 1-0, anchored the defensive effort with a shutout 6-0 victory. Just enough to get into the semifinals, the Ducks played lights out hockey on Sunday to capture the cup.
“I gave the boys a lot of credit for coming back in the semi finals and finals playing determined hockey. I think they took their game to a new level on Sunday, “ Coach Alvin added.
